Get to know the ritual tradition of Adak Pua Kopi Colol East Manggarai

Colol Village is located in the Colol Valley, the first coffee plantation in Manggarai launched by the Dutch colonial government in the 1920s. Colol is located at an altitude of 1200-1600 meters above sea level. From here then coffee plants spread throughout Manggarai Flores. There are six coffee-producing villages in the valley.

East Manggarai Colol Coffee Farmers are an inseparable part of the culture, even coffee is not just a facultative activity of the Colol community, but is part of the lifeblood. Almost all of their life the Colol farmer depended on the agricultural product "coffee". Coffee for the Colol community as an ancestral heritage that needs to be preserved. Therefore, coffee is not just a means, and a symbol of culture, but also a culture itself.

 

There is a unique tradition that has always been carried out by the Colol Community to maintain the culture that has been carried out for generations with the aim of giving thanks and a sign of gratitude to the ancestral spirits who have planted and bequeathed coffee plantations as well as to the creator who always maintains the garden so that it can be harvested. This tradition is in the form of a ritual called the Adak Pua Coffee Ritual.

 

In this ritual is equipped with chicken to be slaughtered, “sirih pinang”  and cigarettes are placed in dinner plates, and coffee fruits are placed in copper plates, accompanied by bonfires prepared and surrounded by family members. This ritual is also a method believed by the community and farmers to predict coffee yields at harvest time.
